Stanford University President Hennessy to step down next year

By Bloomberg

Stanford University President John L. Hennessy, a Silicon Valley power broker who serves on the boards of Google Inc. and Cisco Systems Inc., will step down in 2016 after more than 15 years in the post.

The board of trustees will name a search committee this summer to find a replacement for Hennessy, the university said in a statement on its website. Isaac Stein, the former chairman of the board, will head the panel.

Hennessy, 62, joined Stanford’s faculty in 1977 as an assistant professor of electrical engineering and went on to chair the Computer Science Department and then serve as dean of the School of Engineering. In 1984 he co-founded MIPS Computer Systems, which designed microprocessors. He became president of Stanford in 2000.

Stanford, near Palo Alto, California, has been a cradle of technology companies including Google, which was founded by graduate students Larry Page and Sergey Brin. The school is the fourth-richest when measured by endowment, trailing only Harvard University, the University of Texas system and Yale University, according to an annual study by the National Association of College and University Business Officers and Commonfund.
