Toyota, Nissan widen air-bag recall by 1.6 million cars in Japan

By Bloomberg

Toyota Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Co. expanded air-bag recalls in Japan to cover more vehicles fitted with the devices made by Takata Corp.

A total of about 1.6 million vehicles will be recalled by the two automakers to fix air bags that may explode with too much force and injure occupants, Masaya Ota, a Japan transport ministry official, said by telephone. Toyota will fix about 1.36 million more cars, including the Corolla and Vitz compact models, while Nissan will call back 288,397 vehicles, he said.

The latest measure will add to the about 17 million vehicles that 10 automakers have recalled since 2008 for faulty air bags that have resulted in deaths and injuries. The recall will be the largest for Toyota in Japan over the defect.

Six fatalities in Honda Motor Co. cars, including five in the U.S. and one in Malaysia, have been blamed on shrapnel from Takata air bags. At least 105 injuries are connected to the flaw, U.S. Senator Bill Nelson said last month.

Takata, which has forecast a return to profit this fiscal year, has said it’s unable to estimate the penalties from the lawsuits associated with the air bags and hasn’t set aside any amount to cover them as the cause of the defect is still being investigated.
