Euro supporters have majority in most East EU states, poll shows
By Bloomerg
Four of the six eastern members of the European Union that haven’t yet adopted the euro have majorities in favor of a currency switch, a survey showed.
Support is highest in Romania at 68 percent, compared with 60 percent in Hungary, 55 percent in Bulgaria and 53 percent in Croatia, according to a poll for the EU’s executive, the European Commission, published on Friday. Rejection of the euro is strongest in the Czech Republic, at 70 percent, wile 53 percent of Poles are also against it. Away from the region, 66 percent of Swedes also oppose the switch.
Euro adoption, technically an obligation for all members save the U.K. and Denmark, has become a polarizing issue across the EU’s former communist east. While five of them -- Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania -- have acceded, the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary don’t even have roadmaps.
In the seven EU members surveyed, an average of 79 percent said their countries weren’t ready to adopt the euro, including 86 percent of Poles.
About 7,000 respondents across the seven EU members were interviewed by phone April 20-22. No margin of error was given.
