Emerging stocks pare weekly drop as China rebounds; ruble slides

By Bloomberg

Emerging-market stocks pared a second weekly decline as disappointing Chinese export data spurred speculation on more economic stimulus and investors awaited a U.S. payrolls report. Russia’s ruble weakened.

The Shanghai Composite Index climbed 2.3 percent, paring the biggest weekly loss in five years. Cipla Ltd., a drugmaker, led a 1.8 percent gain in the S&P BSE Sensex after the Indian equity gauge entered a correction on Thursday. China Taiping Insurance Holdings Co. surged 9.5 percent after people with knowledge of the matter said China’s two richest technology moguls joined its $1.7 billion share sale. India’s rupee rose 0.4 percent versus the dollar. The ruble lost 0.9 percent.

The MSCI Emerging Markets Index added 0.7 percent to 1,031.81 at 9:06 a.m. in London, trimming losses this week to 1.4 percent. China’s exports shrank in April, adding downward pressure on an economy grappling with overcapacity and a property slump. Data on U.S. payrolls on Friday may provide clues on the timing of an increase in interest rates.

“Most investors are hopeful for more stimulus in China,” Attila Vajda, managing director at Project Asia Research & Consulting Pte., said from Ho Chi Minh City. “We can probably see volatility in bond and equity markets as they look at the payrolls data to gauge the timing of a rate rise.”

Payrolls Report

U.S. employers probably added 228,000 workers to nonfarm payrolls in April, after a 126,000 increase in March, according to economists surveyed by Bloomberg. Federal Reserve policy makers are monitoring labor data to determine the timing of higher borrowing costs after growth slowed in the first quarter.

The developing-nation gauge has risen 8 percent this year and trades at 12.5 times projected 12-month earnings, data compiled by Bloomberg show. The MSCI World Index has gained 3.9 percent in 2015 and is valued at a multiple of 16.6.

The Shanghai Composite pared its worst weekly slump since July 2010. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index rose 2 percent, ending a three-day slide. Friday’s data in China showed overseas shipments fell 6.2 percent in April, compared with the estimate for a 0.9 percent gain.

Speculation that a link between exchanges in Shenzhen and Hong Kong will start this year also spurred gains in Chinese shares.

Shenzhen Link

The Shenzhen Composite Index rallied 4.2 percent. The State Council has signed off on a stock-trading link between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, said a person familiar with the matter. The program, expected to mimic the Shanghai connect that began in November, will start this year, the person said, asking not to be named as the discussions are confidential.

China Taiping Insurance rallied the most since Dec. 29. Funds backed by Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. founder Jack Ma and Tencent Holdings Ltd. chairman Ma Huateng are buying shares in the insurer’s private placement, the people said Thursday, asking not to be identified as the information is private.

Nine out of 10 industry groups rose, led by a 1.9 percent gain in health-care shares. Cipla jumped 4.9 percent, halting a three-day drop. The Sensex climbed for the first time in four days after closing more than 10 percent below its Jan. 29 record high on Thursday. The rupee halted a five-day slide.

The FTSE/JSE Africa All Share Index gained 1.1 percent, snapping three days of declines. Equity gauges in Indonesia and Thailand added at least 0.6 percent. Russia’s Micex Index rose 0.3 percent while the ruble weakened for a second day in three.
