European stocks advance as investors weigh corporate earnings
By Bloomberg
European stocks advanced, rebounding from yesterday’s drop, as investors weighed company earnings results.
The Stoxx Europe 600 Index rose 0.9 percent to 342.87 at 9:01 a.m. in London. Stocks slid from a five-week high yesterday as energy and mining shares followed commodity prices lower on global-growth concerns. The benchmark equity gauge is still 2.3 percent below an almost seven-year high reached Dec. 5.
U.S. stock-index futures gained 0.6 percent today, indicating the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index will rebound after falling for a fourth day. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index added 0.8 percent after India cut interest rates and Chinese credit growth beat forecasts.
Energy companies rallied the most out of 19 groups in the Stoxx 600, climbing 1.4 percent, even as oil resumed its decline on higher U.S. crude production. Royal Dutch Shell Plc and BP Plc led gains, rising more than 1 percent. Galp Energia SGPS added 3.3 percent, while BG Group Plc increased 1.5 percent.
Beiersdorf AG climbed 6.6 percent after the German maker of Nivea skin creams reported full-year sales of 6.29 billion euros ($7.4 billion), exceeding the 6.25 billion-euro average of analyst estimates.
Cie. Financiere Richemont fell 0.9 percent. The maker of Cartier jewelry reported that third-quarter revenue growth ground to a halt for the first time in six years as protests in Hong Kong disrupted sales in the biggest market for Swiss watches.
Associated British Foods Plc rose 2.6 percent after saying its Primark U.K. budget-fashion chain boosted sales in the past four months by more than analysts anticipated. The company also predicted group operating profit will decline this year as prices fall in its sugar business, while the strong pound will contribute to lower earnings per share.
