Six ways to look younger in 2015 (without surgery or fillers)
By Bloomberg
It’s official: You survived the holidays. And while that means another year has gone by, it doesn’t mean your face has to show it. Tiny changes to your skin, hair, and even your teeth can take years off your mug, give you an extra boost in the office, and (at the very least) help you get carded more often. So, since January is the perfect time to commence a personal maintenance overhaul, below we share six painless grooming moves we’re swearing by in 2015. (We left out “Drink More Water!” because we’re not your mom, but seriously, keep guzzling—it works.)
Add Some Volume
There’s a reason age-proofing products have made their way into the hair care industry—brittle, wispy strands (inevitable for some after the age of 30) can make you look older. Too reinstate some oomph, spray a gel volumizer (like Bumble and Bumble Thickening Hairspray) onto damp or wet locks, and blow dry with a round brush. It’ll lift your roots without leaving hair sticky or crunchy.
Fade Out Dark Spots
If you skipped sunscreen in your teens (Hi, everyone) or spend hours a week exercising outdoors, you may have small brown spots (clusters of pigment called melanin) on your face. Make them disappear by applying a dark spot correcting serum (try Clinique for Men Dark Spot Corrector) to your face morning and evening. Be patient though, it can take a couple months of regular use to see results.
Tend to Your Brows
Women, you’ve got this covered. Men: This isn’t about shaping arches the way your lady likes to. Men’s brows should look rugged, but extra bulk and wayward hairs (like the ones that pop up on your temples or between brows) can make you look like a retiree. Brush brows up with an old toothbrush, and use straight manicure scissors to trim the hairs that rise past the browline. (You can also ask your barber to do this.) Then use a tweezer, like Tweezerman’s GEAR Slant Tweezer, which has a nice wide grip, to remove strays one by one.
Smooth Fine Lines
To minimize wrinkles or stop new ones from forming, retinol (a derivative of Vitamin A) is your best friend. Apply a cream or serum like La Roche Posay Anti-Aging Dermatological Corrector, which will help your face stay firm by turning over new skin cells and preventing collagen breakdown. Only use it before bed, though, as retinol makes skin sun-sensitive.
Brighten Your Smile
Whether your teeth are yellow from a bad coffee habit or the effects of time, whitening strips (like Crest 3D White Professional Effects Whitestrips) have been known to take off five or so birthdays from a man’s face. You can whiten once every six months, and if you don’t have the patience for strips, there’s always laser whitening at the dentist, which takes about an hour and costs around $500.
Take Care of Your Eyes
Booze-fuelled nights and transatlantic flights can do a number on the delicate skin surrounding your eyes, which is also the first place to show signs of aging. Pat on an eye cream like Kiehl’s Eye Alert, which uses caffeine to tighten skin and reduce puff, and cucumber extract to moisturize and protect against crows feet.
