‘Hobbit’ outdraws four New Christmas releases to hold No. 1 spot

“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” held the top spot in U.S. cinemas for a second weekend against four new wide releases on Christmas, including Disney’s “Into the Woods” and Universal Pictures’ “Unbroken.”

“The Battle of the Five Armies,” the last in a J.R.R. Tolkien trilogy, produced $41.4 million in the U.S. and Canada for Warner Bros.’ New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc., Rentrak Corp. said today in a statement. “Unbroken” did $31.7 million. “Into the Woods,” an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s musical retelling of Grimms’ fairy tales, took in $31 million, while “Night at The Museum: Secret of the Tomb” collected $20.6 million.

Fans flocked to “The Hobbit” and “Into the Woods” for a good old-fashioned escape on the last weekend of 2014, while news junkies focused on comic actor Seth Rogen’s “The Interview.” That film, a farce about a plot to kill North Korea’s leader, took in $1.8 million after Sony Pictures canceled the Dec. 25 debut amid a terrorist threat and released it to a few hundred independent theaters and online instead.

With domestic revenue down 5 percent heading into the final week of 2014, U.S. cinemas were poised to register the lowest box-office grosses since 2009, according to Rentrak.
