Mobile carriers gain amid high-speed additions: China overnight
By Bloomberg
China Mobile Ltd., the world’s biggest wireless carrier by users, rose the most in two months in New York after data showed it added more customers than its smaller competitors last month.
Hong Kong-based China Mobile climbed 3.4 percent to a two- week high as of 1:19 p.m. China Telecom Corp. gained for the first time in three days while China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. extended its advance to a fourth day. The Bloomberg China-US Equity Index rose 1.1 percent to 109.18 after adding 3.2 percent last week.
China’s telecommunications companies are racing to provide faster downloads to the nation’s half-billion mobile Internet users. China Mobile, which won government approval a year ago for its high-speed TD-LTE technology, added 2.4 million mobile subscribers last month, more than China Telecom’s 1.3 million and China Unicom’s 0.6 million combined. The FD-LTE standard, which is more compatible with the smaller carriers’ existing networks, is still in trial stages.
“China Mobile had a lead start in offering 4G services,” Praveen Menon, an analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence in New York, said by phone. “You may see the two smaller operators catch up in 2015 as the government is adding more cities for FD-LTE trials.”
China Mobile’s American depositary receipts surged to $60.24 in New York, trading at a 1.9 percent premium over its shares in Hong Kong, the highest in a month. ADRs of Beijing- based China Telecom rallied 3.3 percent to $59.46, set for the strongest close in two weeks. China Unicom added 0.2 percent to $13.62.
The Deutsche X-trackers Harvest CSI 300 China A-Shares ETF slipped 0.7 percent to $35.42 and the iShares China Large-Cap ETF, the largest Chinese exchange-traded fund in the U.S., rose 2 percent to $41.07. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index in Hong Kong jumped 3 percent on a fourth day of gains. The Shanghai Composite Index increased 0.6 percent to the highest since November 2010.
