Azerbaijan to win record number of medals at European Games
Keeping this rate, Azerbaijan will win the record number of medals at the First European Games, said Ajdar Jafarov, the secretary general of Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation.
On the third day of the competitions, Azerbaijan took the lead in medal events at the First European Games.
With their successful performances, Azerbaijani athletes, who have opened a new page in the world sport history, make the Azerbaijani people and the federation very happy, he told Trend on June 16.
“The competitions of freestyle wrestlers are still ahead,” said Jafarov, adding that the Azerbaijani wrestlers do not intend to be content with already gained victories.
The federation’s secretary general added that this success is not a coincidence, but the result of the state attention to the sport, in particular, to wrestling.
The European Games that kicked off in Baku June 12, will last till June 28.
There is a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports.
More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.
Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
