Transport, an integral part of our daily life

By Victoria Moiseyeva

One cannot imagine life without transport - something that we need every single day. Comfortable, versatile and affordable transportation is a natural will of each of us, especially for far away destinations.

There are different types of transport facilities worldwide depending on the nature, length of roads and the peculiarities of each destination of a particular area.

Now fantastic trams are expected to be back to splendid streets of Baku - one of the world's most attractive and beautiful cities. Modern electric cars could well fit the architectural style of the capital city with the unique combination of wide and narrow paths.

Azerbaijan was one of the first countries in the Caucasus to have trams. The most environmentally friendly and noiseless kind of public transport disappeared from the streets of our city in the beginning of the 21st century.

The State Committee on Architecture and Town-building is reviewing plans on renewal of tram lines in Baku as part of the Plan for the regional progress of Greater Baku.

Head of the State Committee said specialists have worked out definite proposals based on the experience of different countries, including the U.S., Austria, and Spain.

The Ministry of Transport and the Baku Executive Power will build tram lines, Abbas Aleskerov added.

Tram lines will lie along the waterfront of Baku, stretching from Azneft area up to the Zigh highway. The trams will also function through the Baku White City.

Furthermore, it is planned to establish the water taxi services, construct an underground station, and build a pedestrian bridge connecting the Fountain Square with Baku City Mall, which will be laid on the coastal strip.

The current public transportation means in Baku include buses, underground, and funicular. Transport fare are low here and comprise only 0.20 euro per-one way ticket.

Typical working individual with average monthly wage of 400 euro in Azerbaijan spends almost 0.04 percent of his/her monthly wages for public transport using one-way trips.

The figure stands at 0.04 percent in Germany with an average monthly rate of 3,000 euro, 0.1 percent in Estonia with average monthly wage of 900 euro and 0.08 percent in Russia with average monthly wage of 660 euro.
