Envoy: Armenia not attractive for German investors due to Nagorno-Karabakh conflict
By Gunay Hasanova
Most of the international companies refuse to invest in Armenia not only for its corrupt regime and weak economy, but also due to the aggressive policy Yerevan pursues in the region.
German Ambassador to Yerevan Matthias Kiesler has recently announced that German companies and investors are interested in countries where there is a large market and political stability, stressing that Armenia is out of their interest area, Aysor reported.
"Unfortunately, German media’s actual news titles about Armenia or the region don’t indicate anything about stability; the particular topic is Karabakh conflict. Such news creates obstacles for small and medium-sized enterprises, which reduces investors’ interests,” he said at a meeting with reporters.
Armenia broke out a lengthy war against Azerbaijan laying territorial claims on its South Caucasus neighbor. Since a war in the early 1990s, Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan's territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding regions.
As a response to Yerevan's aggressive policy, Turkey also closed its borders with Armenia, demanding it to withdraw its troops from occupied lands of Azerbaijan.
The blockade of the country continues to slowdown economic growth in Armenia. Armenia's aggressive policy left the country out of all major regional economic and energy projects.
Previously, Secretary of the Armenian National Congress parliamentary faction Aram Manukyan has admitted that Armenia remains left out of all regional projects, and nothing is expected in the long term.
He noted that the country’s neighbors successfully develop political ties and economic cooperation, but Armenia remains an outcast of the region.
By ignoring four UN Security Council resolutions on immediate withdrawal from the occupied territory of Azerbaijan, as well as appropriate documents adopted by The European Parliament, the Council of Europe, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Non-Aligned Movement, Armenia intends to preserve the status quo in the region and freezes the needed settlement of the conflict.
