Winter calls for hearty fare to warm your bones and nostalgic recipes to celebrate the holidays with your family and friends.

Winter food in Nakhchivan is hearty, comforting and delicious.

Ordubad, also known as the pearl of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, has a mouth-watering array of stomach filling dishes.

The city has very unique and diverse food. Ordubad cuisine will keep you warm and cozy on those chilly winter days.

Mash soup in the winter is especially popular in Ordubad.

Wash dried beans and put them into a large pot with water. Put it on the stove and boil the beans. After water heats, reduce the temperature. Thirty minutes later, change the water. Then add onions, potatoes, govurma (source for plov made from meat), damson and salt and pepper to taste. After boiling potatoes, add tomato and mint.

Yarma pilaf will stump and delight your all your foodiest friends.

Boil a few small onions and wheat groats in boiling water. Don't forget to add butter, qovurma, basil, salt, pepper towards the end of the cooking.

The city's residents also love rice soup. After boiling nuts, add rice, butter, qovurma, egg, sumah, salt and pepper. By the end of cooking, add summer savory.

The food called “Heste” (patient) is usually prepared for people with flu, sore throat. Boil chopped chicken and onion. Then, add rise and salt.

Another beloved dish in Ordubad is qurut. It's made of qatiq, milk product, which is a more solid form of yogurt.

Local residents sieve it in the summer. In winter they add hot water and fried onions. The food is usually eaten with lavash, traditional thin bread.

Calcium-rich qatiq is especially useful in winter as the body gets very weak.

We also suggest you to prepare stuffed onion or “sogan dolmasi”

The red onions are boiled in water. Use a small vegetable knife to cut out and remove the central layers of the onions. Take half the onions center. Then stuff onions with the meat, rice, rosemary, salt and pepper. Fry over a low to medium heat for 15-20 minutes or so, until brown.

Among dishes of Ordubad, gupa also takes a special place. The food, made from the cow or sheep's belly has a lip smacking taste and a mouthwatering aroma.

Separate meat into very small parts and stuff them with nuts, rice, salt, pepper, curcuma. After that sew the meat and boil it. When meat is ready, remove threads.
