Azerbaijani athletes grab three medals at Youth Olympic Games

The second Summer Youth Olympic Games kicked off in east China's Nanjing on August 16.

Azerbaijani delegation led by Vice-President of the National Olympic Committee Chingiz Huseynzade and Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Ismayil Ismayilov participated in the opening ceremony.

Up to 3,700 athletes aged 15-18 from all over the world are participating in the competition. The sportsmen are competing in 28 sports in different arenas and stadiums in Nanjing.

Azerbaijan's team comprised of 21 athletes will compete in 9 events, namely athletics, shooting, judo, wrestling, taekwando, swimming, boxing, archery, rowing.

Azerbaijani athletes showed good results at the first day of the Youth Olympic Games.

Judo fighter Natig Gurbanli at 55kg brought the first medal to Azerbaijan. Being defeated by Bauyrzhan Zhauyntayev from Kazakhstan, Natig won the silver medal.

At the match between Azerbaijani female judo fighter Leyla Aliyeva and to Turkish Melisa Cakmak, at 44kg, the former took the second place and claimed the silver medal.

Azerbaijani female taekwondo fighter Ceren Ozbek at 44kg was so close to the victory, but missed her chance at the final, losing Panipak Wongpattanakit from Thailand and took the silver medal.

The Olympiad will last until August 28.
