Azerbaijani grandmaster enters top five at FIDE Grand-Prix

Azerbaijani grand master Shahriyar Mammadyarov has made it into the top five at the FIDE Grand-Prix tournament in Beijing, China, after defeating Russia`s Sergei Karyakin in the sixth round, AzerTag state news agency reported.

The tournament brings together Sergei Karjakin (Russia), Vesselin Topalov (Bulgaria), Alexandre Morozevich (Russia), Peter LEko (Hungary), Gata Kamsky (US), Anish Giri (Netherlands), Boris Gelfand (Israel), Vasili Ivanchuk (Ukraine), Hao Wang and Yue Wang (China).

The tournament will feature 11 rounds.

Earlier Mammadyarov celebrated victory in the World Rapid Chess Championship.

Mammadyarov represented Azerbaijan at the Chess Olympiads in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2008 and 2010. In 2009, he won a gold medal for Azerbaijan at European Team Chess Championship, having won a bronze medal in 2007 and silver in 2011.
