AFFA: Azerbaijan’s participation in CIS football league under question mark
By Aynur Jafarova
Participation of Azerbaijan in a planned CIS football league is under a question mark and it is necessary to solve many problems to establish such an organization, soccer governing body AFFA's General Secretary Elkhan Mammadov said Thursday.
"Today every CIS country has its own independent championship; international matches are held within the frames of FIFA regulations. Participation in an additional league is impossible," Mammadov told Trend news agency.
Sergey Pryadkin, the president of the Russian Premier League, said at a press conference in Moscow on Thursday that an executive committee has been established for holding a championship of CIS countries.
He underlined that preparing the championship project has been vested in the Russian league.
Mammadov noted that AFFA has not received an official proposal on this matter.
"This idea has been promoted not once, and the press has covered it. The championship in every country and distance among countries must be taken into account when establishing a CIS league. Besides, there is a limit of legionnaires in the championship of each independent country," Mammadov said.
"Another option is designating a single team only for participation in a CIS championship. Then this club would be completely sidelined from matches of the national championship and its return to the local league would be complicated," Mammadov noted.
He said that a CIS soccer cup held once was a very interesting tournament.
"Azerbaijan is ready to provide organizational support for a CIS championship," he added.
