Berti Vogts to coach Azeri football team
German Berti Vogts has been appointed coach of the Azerbaijani
national football team. The decision was passed at a meeting of the
Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan (AFFA) leadership
on Sunday.
The newly-appointed AFFA president Rovnag Abdullayev has said he supported signing a contract with Vogts. He explained the fact that the German coach's appointment has been kept confidential so far by the latter's previous agreement with Nigeria.
Vogts has refused to train the Nigerian national team over personal issues. The country's football association has formally sev- ered the relationship with him.
After discussions, Vogts's candidacy was put on voting and members of the AFFA Executive Committee unanimously decided to vest the job in the German expert. The association passed a decision to sign a two-year contract with Vogts. The preliminary agreement will be inked in Munich on Thursday, while the main contract - in Baku five days thereafter.
Vogts will be the second foreign national to coach the Azerbaijani team. In the past, the position was held by former player of the Brazilian team Carlos Alberto Torres.
Under Vogts's leadership, Germany cruised to victory at the European Cup in 1996.
