US, British diplomats bet on soccer match
British Ambassador to Azerbaijan Carolyn Browne and
US Charge D'Affairs in Baku Donald Lieu made a bet on the soccer
match played by their countries' teams in the World Cup on
Saturday.
The match between Britain and the United States, which are both in Group C, ended in a 1:1 draw.
According to the bet, the envoy of the country whose team loses the match was to put on a national hat of the rival country.
June 28 will be the 60th anniversary of the US win over England in World Football Cup. The only goal in that game was scored by Joe Gaetjens. The game is known as the Miracle on Grass and is considered a remarkable success in the US soccer history.
Speaking prior to the match, Charge D'Affairs Lieu said soccer is a very popular sport in the U.S., while in Britain there is nationwide interest. "When Britons' favorite teams lose, this causes tears and hysteria. So, it would be good if you get a lot of handkerchiefs ready for tomorrow's game. We believe we will win. If the United States wins, the British ambassador will have to put on Uncle Sam's hat."
British Ambassador Browne, in turn, said Charge D'Affairs Lieu would have to put on a British hat. "The British team will win 5:0," she said.
The heads of the diplomatic missions watched the first half of the match together at the British embassy in Baku, the embassy said. Some Azerbaijani officials, lawmakers and NGO representatives who are soccer fans also watched the game there.
Charge D'Affairs Lieu watched the second half-time at the Hazz cafe in the Landmark business center together with US fans.
