Aliyev: Judo cup success in Yerevan ``victory of the people``
President Ilham Aliyev, hosting on Monday
Azerbaijani judo wrestlers who were successful at the European
championship for youths held in Armenia, called their outstanding
wins a victory of the entire people.
``This is a great victory,`` the president said. ``The Azerbaijani flag was raised five times and the Azerbaijani anthem was sounded once in Yerevan. Therefore, this victory is of tremendous significance, and I have no doubt that it will be eternalized in the history of Azerbaijani sports.``
All the five judo wrestlers who represented Azerbaijan at the European Cup, held September 11-14, won medals. Elmar Gasymov claimed gold, while Ilgar Mushkiyev - silver, and Rasim Asadullayev, Fagan Eminoglu and Ramin Gurbanov - bronze medals.
Recalling the objections made shortly before the tournament, President Aliyev said heading to Yerevan was the only right decision to make.
``I was told that some groups, some individuals had objected to this, trying to make themselves look more patriotic. But real patriotism is not about that. You are the ones [judo wrestlers] who displayed real patriotism, you have raised the Azerbaijani flag there. There could not be greater patriotism and, perhaps, greater merits [to the motherland],`` Aliyev said.
The president said the day the Azerbaijani flag will wave in the Armenia-occupied territories was approaching.
``A time will come when Azerbaijani soldiers will raise our flag in the occupied land, in Upper Garabagh, Shusha, Khankandi. That time will come. Azerbaijan`s all-sided development and our economic and military power are bringing that day closer,`` the commander-in-chief said.
