Armenian protesters occupy Yerevan square

YEREVAN – Thousands of antigovernment protesters in Armenia have occupied a central square in the capital after riot police agreed to withdraw without resistance.

The AFP news agency reports that after holding a rally attended by more than 12,000 people, protesters marched to the square, though it wasn’t clear how many people were there.

Opposition leaders said they are hoping to emulate the recent uprisings in the Arab world, but the ruling party has said it will not submit to ultimatums.

Levon Ter-Petrossian, who leads the opposition Armenian National Congress, described the rally as a "last warning."

The rally follows a demonstration earlier this month attended by more than 10,000 people -- the largest in Armenia since post-election protests in 2008 ended in clashes with riot police that left 10 people dead.
