Armenian, Georgian frontier guards clashed, reports claim
Armenian border troops reportedly clashed with Georgian frontier
guards on the two countries’ shared border on Wednesday.
The Armenians attempted to place poles on the borderline but were hampered by the neighboring country’s frontier guards, Armenian Ayk newspaper reported. Further, Georgia stationed additional armed forces on the frontier.
As tensions mounted, the chiefs of the two South Caucasus republics’ border services arrived at the site. Only after tensions subsided were Georgian troops withdrawn from the area.
Artsvin Bagramyan, the spokesman for Armenia’s Security Service, in an interview with Armenian news agency NEWS.am, confirmed that the incident had taken place, adding that "a small problem" had emerged during measurement work related to the delineation of the border with Georgia.
But Georgia’s border service dismissed the reports, saying the allegations on an incident between the two countries’ frontier guards had no merit. It also dismissed as "a lie" the statements about its chief Zaza Gogava’s coming to the area.
Commenting on the matter, Georgian expert on conflicts Paata Zakareishvili said: "I have familiarized myself with the circulating reports about an incident on the Georgia-Armenia border. As is seen, stand-off indeed took place there between the sides. But, as far as I know, the incident has now been taken care of."
Zakareishvili did not rule out that such incidents may reoccur in the future.*
