French politician disappoints Armenians
A French politician has disappointed Armenians by
admitting he was merely trying to seek votes from the public during
his campaign to recognize the "genocide" that allegedly happened in
Turkey in the early 20th century.
Former French Culture Minister Jack Lang said he had supported a bill in his country`s parliament in October 2007 not to restore historical justice, but to gain votes among Armenians while on the campaign trail.
The statement has angered Armenians living in France. The Armenian community demanded that the ex-minister clarify his stance on the issue.
Alexis Govciyan, who heads an association of Armenian organizations in France, sent a letter to Lang questioning his former support. In his reply, Lang indicated that he had no intention to begin a debate with anyone on any issues.
France is one of the countries with a powerful Armenian lobby and the country`s parliament has already recognized the purported genocide. Further, the lower chamber of the French legislature approved a decision in 2007 that made it a crime to deny the "genocide," however the upper chamber did not approve the measure.
