Azerbaijan, Libya agree to boost energy co-op
Oil-rich Azerbaijan and Libya agreed to cooperate in
the energy and trade sectors at the first meeting of the
intergovernmental commission in Baku last Wednesday. Addressing the
meeting, which concluded with the signing of a joint document, the
commission co-chair, Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf
Khalafov, said trade relations between the two countries were far
from satisfactory. He emphasized the commission`s role in boosting
Azerbaijani-Libyan cooperation, calling for joint efforts in
increasing bilateral trade turnover.
Libyan Deputy Foreign Minister Mohammed Omar Albarani concurred on the importance of economic collaboration between the two oil-rich countries, calling the oil sector as a priority field for this collaboration. Albarani did not rule out that Azerbaijan and Libya will jointly implement oil and gas projects in the future.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the two countries signed a protocol on cooperation. The document places an emphasis on energy and trade, according to the Azerbaijani deputy minister. It also covers interaction in the fields of agriculture, education, healthcare, tourism, culture, youth and sports.
As part of the cooperation in the area of education, the protocol envisages mutual recognition of higher education and science degree diplomas.
Azerbaijan and Libya plan to sign more than ten documents by the next intergovernmental meeting, which is due in Tripoli next year, officials said.
Diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Libya were established in 1992 when a Libyan delegation led by the finance minister visited Azerbaijan. A protocol on the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, an agreement on setting up a joint commission as well as documents on cooperation, trade and the opening of air communications were signed during the visit.
