US official upbeat on NABUCCO project
A US official has said the NABUCCO pipeline, which seeks to pump gas from resource-rich Caspian and Central Asia regions to Europe, will be built.
"The project will be built regardless of anyone`s position," US special envoy for Eurasian energy issues, Boyden Gray, said on a recent visit to Rome.
He noted that the document on building the conduit is to be signed in six months, explaining the delay due to the rising cost of construction operations.
The NABUCCO project, worth 8 billion euros, seeks to deliver 30 billion cubic meters of gas to European markets through a 3,300-kilometer pipeline traveling across Azerbaijan and Turkey to Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary and Austria. The first gas shipments via the pipeline is expected to be delivered in 2013. Only Azerbaijan has agreed to transport its exported gas via NABUCCO.
