Turkey seeks to boost gas imports
Turkey`s Botas company plans to boost the volume of gas it
purchases from Azerbaijan during the winter from 8 million cubic
meters to 12-15 million cubic meters a day, as a precaution against
shipping problems with Russian suppliers that have recently become
a concern.
Turkey has banned imports of some Russian-made goods, in response to Russia`s earlier ban on Turkish commodities.
Botas has, further, begun to pump more gas into storage facilities. Thus, if gas shipments from Iran is halted, and Russian giant Gazprom refuses to supply additional gas to Turkey, the country will meet its domestic demand using the gas stored in these facilities as well as imports from Azerbaijan.
Gazprom currently supplies 60% of Turkey`s demand for natural gas.
Turkey began purchasing Azerbaijani gas in 2006.
