President of the Azerbaijani state oil company SOCAR Rovnag Abdullayev paid an unexpected visit to Turkmenistan on Thursday.
Abdullayev was received by President Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov late on the same day. The discussions centered on energy security, regional cooperation, ways of jointly benefiting from abundant resources of the Caspian Sea, and interaction in taking hydrocarbons from the region to energy-thirsty world markets, SOCAR said.
Turkmenistan's state news agency reported that the sides had exchanged views on prospects for collaboration that is strategically important for the economies of two countries, which possess considerable hydrocarbon reserves and advanced fuel and energy sectors.
Abdullayev said Azerbaijan was extremely interested in forging business relations with the Turkmen counterparts. He said the international conference on the oil and gas potential of Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan to be held in Baku in September with the participation of the world's majors and international financial and investment institutions will be of particular importance.
President Ilham Aliyev has issued a decree to organize the energy conference. A special committee will be established for the purpose. The goal of the event is to promote a more efficient use of energy resources in the two countries and implement mutually-beneficial regional and international projects in this area.
