Kazakhstan sees BTC exports as alternative to Russian route
Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev has said the Central Asian
state was interested in transporting its hydrocarbons through the
Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) main export pipeline pumping Caspian oil
to world markets.
While making it clear that his country relied on exports through
Russian territory, he said BTC exports were also an option and that
the BTC project "would be effective only if it [the pipeline]
receives Kazakh oil".
"We are pursuing a multi-vector policy," Nazarbayev told a news
conference. "The Russian route is important for us today, and if
the Russian side provides us with great opportunities for the
exports of our energy resources to world markets through its
territory, we will do that. But if there are no other alternatives,
we will go through the Caspian Sea [via the
Aktau-Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan route] to sell our oil in international
markets…There is no policy involved here, only economic
interests."
