Israel keen on buying Azeri gas
Israel plans to buy 12 billion cubic meters of gas from
Azerbaijan over 10 years, its minister of infrastructure Binyamin
Ben-Eliezer said Tuesday on the outcomes of his visit to the
country.
"We are working on a project that envisions transportation of
Azerbaijani gas to Israel for a period of 20 to 30 years. Technical
details are currently under discussion.
"The effectiveness of the project is being studied. After the
contract is signed, construction of a gas pipeline from Turkey to
Israel will take three years. We plan to start importing
Azerbaijani gas in 2012," Ben-Eliezer said.
Azerbaijan's gas is transported through the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum
pipeline which links the country with Georgia and Turkey.
He praised the outcomes of his visit to Azerbaijan. "I am returning
from Baku with results surpassing my expectations," the minister
told a news conference.
Ben-Eliezer said the gas exports contract to be inked will play the
role of a guarantor of peace and stability in the Middle East. He
called on Azerbaijani companies to participate in the tender on the
supplies of gas to Israel which will be announced late this
year.
The winner of the tender will be supplying the country with gas
over the next 30 years.
