Trans Anadolu pipeline to take Azeri gas to Europe via Turkey
Azerbaijani natural gas is to be exported to Europe through Turkey by a new pipeline called Trans Anadolu, head of Azerbaijan’s state energy firm SOCAR Rovnag Abdullayev was quoted by Turkish news agency Anadolu as saying.
Abdullayev told a Black Sea energy forum in Istanbul that Azerbaijan and Turkey have begun exploring the possibility of building the new pipeline, which will stretch from Turkey’s eastern border to its western border.
The SOCAR head added that the project on the construction of the Trans Anadolu (Samsun-Ceyhan) pipeline will not affect the Nabucco project -- which aims to pump gas from the Caspian and Central Asia regions to European markets.
The new pipeline in Turkey, planned by Baku and Ankara, is designed to export most of the 50 billion cubic meters of gas that Azerbaijan intends to produce annually by 2025.
Project partners are expected to begin construction operations in 2012, with their completion scheduled by 2017, when the second stage of development will begin at Shahdaniz, Azerbaijan’s gas condensate field in the Caspian Sea.
