Clinton welcomes Turkish-Azeri energy deals
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has welcomed the landmark energy agreements signed recently by Turkey and Azerbaijan.
Clinton made the statement at an annual conference on US-Turkish relations, according to the US State Department’s website.
The package of Turkish-Azerbaijani energy deals, signed early last week in Izmir, includes an agreement to sell gas to Turkey during Phase 2 of developing Azerbaijan’s Shahdaniz gas field in the Caspian Sea from 2017, and an agreement on transit of gas from Shahdaniz-2 to Europe in 2017-2042 via Turkey.
The transit deal is necessary for the implementation of a slew of ambitious EU-backed pipeline projects aiming to transport Azerbaijani gas to European markets as part of the Southern Gas Corridor, which will diversify sources of energy for European countries.
The package also includes an agreement on amendments to the document on the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline, which transports Azerbaijani oil through Turkey.
