Egypt wants to become sixth exporter of gas to Turkey

ANKARA – Egypt intends to export its gas to Turkey, said Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz, Anadolu news agency reported.

"Negotiations with the Egyptian side were successful. Turkey does not exclude the possibility of purchasing gas from Egypt," Yildiz said.

The minister said that Turkey and Egypt signed two agreements on energy cooperation. Countries already have agreements for exploration of oil and gas in the Mediterranean.

Construction of Pan-Arab pipeline is expected to complete by the end of this year, the minister said.

At present, relations between Israel and Egypt, which supplies gas to Tel Aviv, have deteriorated considerably, which experts say could lead to cessation of supply by Cairo. It is not excluded that Turkey will act as a buyer of this gas.

Ankara has contracts to import gas from Russia (30 billion cubic meters), Algeria (four billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas), Nigeria (1.2 billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas), Iran (10 billion cubic meters of gas) and Azerbaijan (6.6 billion cubic meters of gas).

In 2010, Turkey purchased from exporters about 32.5 billion cubic meters of gas. Gas consumption in Turkey in 2010 reached more than 31.46 billion cubic meters.
