Serbia seeks to join AGRI project, its leader says

BELGRAD – Serbian President Boris Tadic has said his country is seeking to join the AGRI project that will supply Azerbaijani liquefied gas through Georgia to Eastern Europe.

"Gas is more important for Europe than nuclear energy," Tadic said while hosting Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Belgrade on Wednesday. "Azerbaijan is taking strides in this area. It helps to develop Azerbaijan’s economy."

President Aliyev in turn said Azerbaijan favors Serbia’s joining the AGRI project.

Aliyev added that Azerbaijan is interested in energy cooperation with the country.

The AGRI project envisages transporting Caspian gas to the Black Sea coast of Georgia where the gas will be liquefied at an LNG terminal. Further, the LNG will be transported by tankers to the Romanian port of Constanta and then, in the form of natural gas, will be supplied to customers in Romania and other European countries.

Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania and Hungary signed an agreement on the project in Baku last September.
