Azerbaijan ‘has enough gas for Nabucco’
BAKU – Azerbaijan has enough natural gas to fill the Nabucco pipeline that will supply fuel to European markets, the pipeline consortium said.
Christian Dolezal, the spokesman for Nabucco Gas Pipeline International, said there is a slew of other potential suppliers as well. Iraq also has huge gas reserves, and supports construction of the pipeline like Azerbaijan. Moreover, Turkmenistan is interested in exporting its gas through the conduit, Dolezal said.
The 7.9 billion euros Nabucco pipeline will carry up to 31 billion cubic meters a year of gas from the Caspian region and the Middle East across Turkey into southeast Europe and onwards to an Austrian trading hub. Construction is planned to start in 2012 and first supplies delivered in 2015. Nabucco participants are the Austrian OMV, Hungarian MOL, Bulgarian Bulgargaz, Romanian Transgaz, Turkish Botas and German RWE, each with an equal share of 16.67 percent.
Dolezal said 4 billion euros will be invested in Turkey alone to build the Nabucco pipeline. He said technical work is drawing to a close in the areas to be crossed by the conduit, voicing confidence that construction operations will begin immediately after an investment decision on the project is made.
