Russia, Ukraine may sign oil transit deal in a month

MOSCOW – Russia and Ukraine are close to signing a new oil transit deal, Russian Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko said on Wednesday, Reuters reported.

"(It will be signed) in no longer than a month," Shmatko told reporters in Kiev.

Russia reduced oil transit through Ukraine to Europe this year after Ukraine increased transit fees by 30 percent. Ukraine's pipeline network shipped 15.5 million tonnes of oil, mostly from Russia, in the first nine months of the year.

The two sides have been discussing a new agreement since May, which could provide a more stable fee in exchange for a guaranteed transit volume.
