Kazakh oil to flow via BTC pipeline from 2015: envoy
BAKU – Kazakhstan’s oil will be transported through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline in the coming years, Kazakh Ambassador in Baku Serik Primbetov has said.
He said that in the near future crude produced from the Central Asian state’s giant Kashagan field will begin to be pumped through the main export pipeline.
The conduit transports Azerbaijan’s crude to world markets through Georgia and Turkey.
According to Primbetov, crude from another Kazakh field, Tengiz, is currently transported not through the BTC, but by railway.
"This is linked to the volume of transported oil and transit fees. Operation of the Kazakhstan Caspian Transportation System is important for us. Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR and KazMunaiGas are working together in this area. Large volumes of oil will be transported via this system after full-field development of the Kashagan field begins in 2015."
BTC’s throughput capacity is currently 1.2 million barrels per day. The oil transported via BTC to world markets mainly comes from the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) and Shahdaniz fields in the Azerbaijan sector of the Caspian Sea. Following the signing of a new transportation agreement in July, transporting crude oil from Turkmenistan began. BTC also has ongoing agreements to carry oil from the Tengiz field in Kazakhstan.
