Iranian, Russian gas not needed for NABUCCO - EU rep
The NABUCCO project that envisions transporting Caspian gas to
world markets does not require Iranian and Russian gas, the
spokesman for the European Union energy commissioner Ferran
Tarradellas says.
Turkey's energy minister Hilmi Guler has said that if Europeans are not interested in acquiring Iranian gas, their demands should be taken into account. He said Azerbaijan's biggest field, Shahdaniz, already holds sufficient reserves for exports. Guler said that there will be no problem with supplying natural gas to Europe after output surges at Shahdaniz starting in 2012.
At the same time, he said talks on the issue should be continued with Tehran, as gas is a valuable source of energy, which requires diversification of supplies.
Building the 3,300-km long conduit through the Caspian Sea under the $5.8 billion NABUCCO project could take until 2011-2012. The pipe's annual throughput capacity is estimated at 31 billion cubic meters. The conduit by-passing Russia is to pump gas from the Caspian region, the Middle East and Central Asia to Europe - via Azerbaijan, Turkey, Georgia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Austria. The project will help European countries to diversify supplies of energy, while the U.S. believes NABUCCO could help prevent Russian domnance on gas supplies to world markets.
