Blast hits pipeline carrying Iranian gas to Turkey
ANKARA – A blast blamed on separatist Kurdish rebels hit a pipeline carrying natural gas from Iran to Turkey overnight, forcing the shutdown of the conduit, officials said on Wednesday, AFP reported.
The explosion in the eastern Agri province occurred as a result of "an attack by the separatist terrorist organisation," Governor Ali Yerlikaya said in a statement carried by the Anatolia news agency, referring to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party.
Last month the rebels were held responsible for blowing up another section of the pipeline in the same province, which borders Iran.
The blaze set off by the latest explosion has been extinguished and repair work on the pipeline was under way, an official from Turkey’s state gas and oil company said. Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said repairs would likely take seven to eight days.
