Claims Saakashvili sold major oil field to Israeli businessman

TBILISI – Georgia’s Labor Party claims that President Mikheil Saakashvili has sold a major oil field to an Israeli businessman for the price of a land plot.

Kakha Dzagania, an executive of the party, told a press conference that Saakashvili, together with former defense minister David Kezerashvili, had allegedly transferred the field, which covers a hectare of land, to Shmuel Flatto-Sharon, a Jewish businessman and former Knesset member.

According to Dzagania, the deposit, located in eastern Georgia, 100 km away from the capital Tbilisi, holds an estimated 800 million barrels of oil and has market value of about $50 billion.

"Saakashvili and drug addict Kezerashvili sold oil discovered on account of budget funds to the Israeli businessman on the condition that they would take a share in this afterwards," Dzagania alleged.

He said the Labor Party demands revoking the alleged agreement, urging to return the oil field to state ownership.

The party also called on international oil companies to refrain from doing business with Flatto-Sharon.
