Iran to produce oil from Hengam field

TEHRAN – Crude oil production from Iran's Hengam oil field in the Persian Gulf begins on August 24, head of Iranian Offshore Oil Company (IOOC), Mr. Mahmud Zirakchianzadeh was quoted by Press TV as saying.

"Test production from the oil field began in April with a production of 4,000 barrels per day," Zirakchianzadeh said on Monday.

"The current production of Hengam oil field is 7,000 bpd," IRINN quoted him as saying.

Zirakchianzadeh added the oil field was developed by Iranian contractors in less than 18 months.

Hengam oil field, which was discovered in 1975, contains almost 600 million barrels and is located between Iran and Oman in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran shares 18 oil and gas fields with neighboring countries, including Oman, in the strategic oil-rich region of Persian Gulf.

Iran is OPEC's second-largest producer after Saudi Arabia. In 2009, Iran's crude production stood approximately at 3.8 million bpd.
