Iran seeks to raise gas imports
Iran is seeking to increase gas imports from Azerbaijan and is in talks with Baku on the proposed increase, Iranian Ambassador Mahammad Bagir Bahrami has said.
Bahrami told the Baku-based ANS TV channel that Tehran was interested in importing an additional 5 billion cubic meters of gas and discussions were underway between the two countries on laying additional pipelines.
Azerbaijan's state energy firm SOCAR and the National Iranian Gas Export Company (NIGEC) signed a memorandum last November on supplying 500 million cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas to Iran's northern regions in 2010.
Azerbaijan produces most of its gas from the giant Shahdaniz field in the Caspian Sea, which holds estimated reserves of 1.2 trillion cubic meters.*
