European importers in struggle for Azeri gas
European importers have stepped up efforts to secure Azerbaijani gas imports, with officials and energy executives from Greece and Romania simultaneously arriving in the country to negotiate the issue.
The visit by the two delegations, headed by Harry Sachinis, Chairman and CEO of Greece’s DEPA company, and Romania's Deputy Economy Minister Tudor Serban comes amid a meeting of the shareholders in the project on tapping Shahdaniz, Azerbaijan’s biggest gas field in the Caspian Sea. Closed-door discussions were held Monday with the Romanian representatives at the Ministry of Industry and Energy and with the Greek representatives at Azerbaijan’s state energy firm SOCAR.
The Azerbaijani government, not Shahdaniz shareholders, will decide which company will buy gas to be produced during Phase 2 of the project.
Building a pipeline to link Turkey and Greece will allow to deliver Azerbaijani gas to the Greek market and further to other European countries. As for Romania, it can import Azerbaijani fuel both through Russian and Turkish territory.
The Shahdaniz field, operated by an international consortium, launched production in 2006. It has the capacity to produce 318 billion feet of gas from its initial phase, with another 706 billion cubic feet expected from Phase 2, which is to begin in 2013. During the second stage of the project, Azerbaijan plans to export its gas to Europe.*
