Six Azeri oilworkers died in 2009, rights group says
Six people working in Azerbaijan’s oil sector died as a result of failure to observe labor safety regulations in 2009, the head of a local rights group says.
Mirvari Gahramanova, chairperson of the Organization for the Protection of Oilworkers’ Rights, told a news conference Friday that though the families of those people have been provided with compensations, no one has faced criminal charges over the accidents.
The organization claims that violations of workers’ rights were reported last year both in foreign companies operating in the country and Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR.
According to Gahramanova, the violations in foreign companies mostly included cases of restricting the rights of employees embedded in the Labor Code while concluding employment contracts; there were instances of infringing upon the rights of women as well.
In SOCAR, the problems mostly included unlawful termination of employment contracts, the rights group maintained.
Rights defender Azer Guliyev said 36 lawsuits were filed by oilworkers in 2009. The courts ruled in favor of the plaintiff on 22 of the lawsuits and the demands laid out in four lawsuits were partly met.*
