Ukraine ramping up refining of Azeri oil - envoy
Ukraine is increasing the volume of refined Azerbaijani oil, Ukrainian Ambassador Boris Klimchuk has said.
He told a press conference Thursday that more than 500,000 tons of the South Caucasus republic’s oil have been refined in his country this year for the first time in the history of bilateral trade relations.
The ambassador said Ukrainian firms are buying Azerbaijani oil in Switzerland and transporting it through the Ukrainian town of Odessa at the Black Sea to a refinery in Kremenchuk, a key industrial city in central Ukraine.
Klimchuk said Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR has purchased about 30 gas-filling stations in Ukraine, and fuel to be used at the facilities will be provided by local refineries.
The envoy noted, further, that, for the first time in the 18-year history of Ukrainian-Azerbaijani trade, a $16 million positive balance was reported in Azerbaijan’s favor in 2009. In October Ukraine exported goods worth $57.5 million to Azerbaijan and imported commodities totaling $73.6 million from the country. Also, Ukraine has advanced to being the fourth top trading partner for Azerbaijan from the previous fifth position, Klimchuk said.
The ambassador also said that, according to the Azerbaijani side, bilateral trade turnover made up $474m in January-October. Azerbaijan imported mainly electronic appliances and non-ferrous metals from Ukraine.
Klimchuk predicts that bilateral trade will amount to $800m this year, with a further increase to over $1 billion anticipated in 2010.*
