Nabucco unfeasible without Iran: envoy
The Nabucco project seeking to supply Caspian gas to
energy-thirsty European markets through a pipeline bypassing Russia
cannot materialize without Iran, its ambassador in Baku, Mahammad
Bagir Bahrami, has said.
``Construction of the pipeline is possible only after Iran`s participation in the project has been approved,`` Bahrami told the press Tuesday.
The ambassador added that Tehran`s joining the project was being hampered by ``states outside the region.``
The West is opposed to Iran`s involvement in the initiative due to Tehran`s nuclear program, fearing it is aimed at making bombs. But Iran says its nuclear enrichment work is for peaceful power purposes.
The 3,300-kilometer Nabucco pipeline, which will run from eastern Turkey to the Austrian capital Vienna, will carry up to 31 billion cubic meters of gas annually and is expected to come online in 2014. European countries are looking to diversify supplies of energy and curb Russia`s grip on gas supplies. Azerbaijan is among the main suppliers for Nabucco.
