Gas output down over slowing demand: BP
3.4 billion cubic meters of gas were produced from Azerbaijan`s biggest field, Shahdaniz, in the first half of 2009. The figure is 350 million cu. m. below the projection, says the spokesperson for BP Azerbaijan, the project operator.
Tamam Bayatly told the local ANS TV channel that the reduction in output was due to a decrease in demand in the second quarter of the year over hot weather. Thus, orders from gas importers dwindled in this period.
``This is a matter of purchasing,`` Bayatly said. ``In other words, gas is a product that cannot be produced and stored somewhere like oil. Gas is produced based on orders and demand.``
The offshore Shahdaniz field, discovered in 1999, launched production in 2006. The Shahdaniz field, operated by an international consortium, has the capacity to produce 318 billion feet of gas from its initial phase, with another 706 billion cubic feet expected from Phase 2, which is to begin in 2013. Turkey is the main buyer of Shahdaniz gas during Phase 1. During the second stage, Azerbaijan plans to export its gas to Europe, including Greece and Italy, and intense talks are underway on future deliveries with the government of Turkey, a transit state.
Georgia, a neighboring South Caucasus republic, is currently receiving 1 million cubic meters of Shahdaniz gas a day.
