Refinery may be built in Ukraine for Azeri oil
A refinery processing Azeri oil may be built in
Ukraine, Bogdan Sokolovski, the representative of the Ukrainian
President on energy issues has said.
The refinery will have an estimated annual capacity of 8-10 million tons of oil. According to Sokolovski, the project is attractive for Baku, given that Ukraine is located close to supply markets in Europe.
The country to finance construction operations is currently unknown, but Sokolovski stressed that the important issue is not the source of funding but cooperation. Sokolovski pointed out Kyiv`s successful past collaboration with Azerbaijani state oil company SOCAR.
"Our relations with SOCAR could be considered a model. The company is sending 5 million tons of oil a year at this point," the presidential envoy said, expressing hope that this cooperation continue.
Azerbaijan and Ukraine have another joint project - the Odessa-Brody oil pipeline, which envisions exporting crude from the resource-rich South Caucasus republic to energy-hungry European markets while bypassing Russia.
The Odessa-Brody pipeline links the Ukrainian cities of Odessa at the Black Sea and Brody near the Ukrainian-Polish border. The 667 km-long conduit, built between 1996-2001, will be further extended to Plock and Gdansk in Poland. The pipeline could serve as an additional route to deliver Azeri oil to Europe.
