Europeans `to launch Nabucco in 2014`
European countries and companies intend to launch
the Nabucco pipeline to pump Caspian gas to Europe in 2014. In the
initial stage, it will transport gas from Azerbaijan and
Turkmenistan, to be followed by exports from northern Iraq, and
finally, if political issues are resolved, include supplies of
Iranian and Russian fuel, says Reinhard Mitschek, the managing
director of NABUCCO Gas Pipeline International.
He made it clear that no financing problems are in store for the Western-backed project. The long-awaited inter-governmental deal on the project is to be signed with the participating states within a month.
Mitschek said he was content with the course of ongoing talks with gas producers.
"We plan to transport both Azerbaijani and Turkmen gas via Nabucco, and talks to that end are underway with Ashgabat. Negotiations with Turkmenistan, being carried out by the German shareholder company, are gaining momentum… As for the volume of gas to be received from Azerbaijan`s Shahdaniz field, I can say that transit of 5-8 billion cubic meters annually is planned during Phase 2 [of the Shahdaniz development].
The 8 billion euro project seeks to deliver about 30 billion cubic meters of gas a year to European markets through a 3,300-kilometer pipeline traveling via Azerbaijan and Turkey to Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary and Austria. By creating this pipeline, the EU is trying to reduce its reliance on Russian gas.
