SOCAR to hold talks with world`s majors on gas exports
Azerbaijan`s state energy firm SOCAR will hold talks on selling the country`s natural gas with representatives of a slew of foreign companies participating at the Caspian oil and gas exhibition in Baku, the company`s president says.
Rovnag Abdullayev told the press on Tuesday that attendees at the major exhibition and conference include companies interested in buying gas from the resource-rich South Caucasus republic. SOCAR executives will avail of this opportunity to hold separate negotiations with each of the potential buyers.
"It is after this that we will determine to which country and in what volume gas will be sold from Shahdaniz [Azerbaijan`s biggest field in the Caspian Sea]," Abdullayev said.
Official reports say that the Shahdaniz field holds 1.5 trillion cubic meters of gas.
Azerbaijan plans to produce 24 billion cubic meters of gas in 2009, including 9 billion from Shahdaniz. After Phase 2 of the project is launched in 2013-2014, the country plans to export its gas to Europe, including Greece and Italy.
About 300 companies from 22 countries are taking part in the four-day exhibition underway in the Azerbaijani capital.
