Presidential couple join Novruz festivities

Baku enjoys the arrival of spring with a warm weather and the nationwide festivities on the occasion of Novruz Bayram, the national holiday of the Azerbaijani people.

The celebrations were attended by President Ilham Aliyev, First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva and family members.

The head of state, his wife and family members first arrived at the square in front of the Maiden’s Tower. Children, dressed in national costumes, greeted the president and his spouse on Novruz holiday.

Warriors carrying swords and shields reminiscent of Azerbaijan's ancient history stood on the fortress walls of the Old City and in the square.

Dede Gorgud gave his blessing and wishing, praying that the Novruz holiday will bring abundance to the Azerbaijani people. Children in national costumes performed dances on the square.

Art masters sang songs glorifying the spring and Azerbaijan, putting the people in the best of spirits.

President Aliyev lit the Novruz bonfire, and then made a speech.

Afterwards, the president and his family members visited the National Seaside Park. Here, the presidential couple met the traditional characters of Novruz – Kosa and Kechal.

As part of the festivities, the head of state and his family members were acquainted with the exhibition of products grown on the fertile lands of Azerbaijan.

Novruz dishes brought from different regions caused interest among the participants of the festivities.

Sweets and other traditional delicacies were presented at the celebration - the symbols of the Novruz holiday.

During the festivities, President Aliyev and the first lady watched the performances of the athletes in front of the stands dedicated to the First European Games to be held in Baku this June.
