Azerbaijan to turn biggest island into 'pearl'
By Nazrin Gadimova
Azerbaijan's Boyuk Zira island is going to turn into one of the most interesting parts of the capital under the "Azerbaijani Pearl" project.
The Azerbaijan's Architects Union held a meeting to discuss this tourism project last week.
Addressing the event, the country's famous architect Rasim Babakishiyev informed the participants of the main points of the project, saying that island's relief allows the creation of any kind of infrastructure there.
Babakishiyev noted that all the requirements of the modern era were taken into account in the project, adding that its main advantage is that every infrastructure will be implemented for the residents of the island, also known as Nargen.
The architects who participated in the discussions made valuable suggestions, while Chairman of the Union of Architects Elbay Gasimzadeh and others noted that the project is professionally prepared.
It was noted that being the biggest island of the Baku Archipelago, Boyuk Zira will increase the flow of tourists who will learn about the culture and history of the country, because traditional elements will be used in the project.
The Caravanserai Hotel, which will be built in Azerbaijani national style, will make tourists feel the Middle Ages, Babakishiyev said.
Religious tolerance will also be taken into account on the island, and mosques, churches, and synagogues are going to be built there.
Moreover, the island will be able to host major international events and meetings at the highest level, and a big hall with the capacity to seat 3000-3500 people will be built between two large hotels.
Under the project, automobiles running on gasoline will not be used on the island. For those who want to explore the island, ships from the Azneft and Zig village will operate.
