Integrity of South Caucasus states key principle in settling conflicts - Romanian leader
"Romania backs the resolution of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper
(Nagorno) Garabagh conflict and other disputes in the region within
the territorial integrity of regional states," he said during a
broad meeting with President Ilham Aliyev in Baku on Thursday.
Basescu was in Azerbaijan as part of his tour of the Black Sea nations.
President Aliyev, in his remarks, underscored the development of friendly relations with Romania in the political, economic and cultural fields.
"Romania and Azerbaijan are close allies, and regional cooperation between the two countries is being successfully carried out," he said.
Further, Aliyev said Basescu`s visit was pivotal for boosting cooperation and security in the region.
Basescu, for his part, said Azerbaijan plays a tremendous role in regional issues. The resource-rich South Caucasus republic greatly contributes to ensuring European energy security, he said.
The Romanian leader said the talks he held were an indication that Bucharest and Baku adhered to similar positions on a majority of key issues, including security and energy. "The fact that our views overlap, strengthens both countries` roles in these areas."
In a joint statement issued by the two leaders after the talks, President Aliyev has had praise for his counterpart`s actions to defuse the crisis in the region.
"Azerbaijan is implementing large-scale projects, and regional stability is pivotal for their becoming a reality," he said.
Aliyev said his country would like to see the situation in Georgia return to normal as soon as possible.
"Azerbaijan supports Georgia`s territorial integrity and backs resolution of conflicts in the South Caucasus, as well as in Moldova, within the territorial integrity of states," the president said.
The Azerbaijani leader also said a new stage has begun in Azerbaijani-Romanian energy cooperation.
"We have to continue joint efforts aimed at bolstering cooperation of the Caspian and Black Sea nations," Aliyev said, adding that Azerbaijan would also continue working to provide European energy security.
Prior to arriving in Azerbaijan, the Romanian leader visited Ukraine. Then, he headed to Georgia after wrapping up his visit to Baku. Basescu also visited Moldova and Turkey.
Basescu`s tour of mostly Black Sea nations will allow him to hold talks on implementing transit projects, analysts say. Romania is Georgia`s neighbor on the Black Sea coast and is an active partner of the regional group, GUAM, which is made up of Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova. Moreover, the Eastern European country is seeking involvement in the realization of energy and transport projects running through South Caucasus states.
